What is in this Mother's Day set?

Homemade things are often the gifts mums keep the longest. This set gives children a head start: a card that is ready to sign, a coupon book of promises they can keep, and a fill-in page about their mum that is lovely to look back on.

When is Mother's Day in 2027?

The date depends on where you live, which is why the maker asks for your country.

Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday, so it moves each year. Mother's Day in the US, Canada and Australia is always the second Sunday in May. Office Holidays lists the US date as 9 May 2027.

How do I make the Mother's Day card?

Type your child's name and your message, and the card fills in. The default message says thank you for everything you do, but it is much nicer in the child's own words, even if it is just one line. The second card on the page has blank lines, for children who would rather write it themselves.

Cut along the middle line, then fold each card in half with the printing on the outside, so the flower is on the front and the message is on the back.

1. Choose your country so the pages say Mum or Mom.
2. Add your child's name, and what they call her if it is something else.
3. Write a message together, or keep the suggested one.
4. Print, cut and fold the card.
5. Let your child sign it and add a drawing.

The all about my mum page

This is a fill-in page with the child's name at the top and eight prompts, such as her favourite food, what she always says, what makes her laugh and why they love her. At the bottom there is a box to draw a picture of the two of them.

The answers are often funny and very honest, which is what makes them worth keeping. Younger children can say their answers out loud for a grown-up to write down. Date the back of the page and keep one from each year.

Ideas for a Mother's Day coupon book

Each coupon is one small promise from the child. The set starts with eight ideas, such as breakfast in bed, a cup of tea made by me, a tidy bedroom without being asked and a walk together, just us. Change them to promises your child can really keep, up to 16.

Cut out the coupons, stack them and staple along one edge to make a little book. Each coupon says it can be used any time, with your child's name on it.

• Help at home: setting the table, folding washing, helping with dinner.
• Time together: a story, a game, a bike ride, a baking afternoon.
• Small treats: a hug on demand, a lie-in, choosing the film.

Making it with children of different ages

Toddlers and preschoolers can colour the flower on the card, press a thumbprint inside, and tell you their answers for the all about my mum page while you write them down. Their answers are usually the funniest.

School-age children can type the message and the coupon promises themselves, then sign everything by hand. Older children might like to write the whole card on the blank-line version and turn the coupon book into a proper booklet with a cover. If there are several children, print a set for each, so every child has something of their own to give.
