What is in this Grandparents Day printable set?
Three pages made to be filled in together, either at a visit or over a video call. Each uses the names you type, so the interview sheet reads "Lily interviews Grandma Rose" and the card says "Dear Grandma Rose".
The set is free, runs in your browser and needs no account. Print on A4 or US Letter, or save a PDF to email to a family member who lives far away.
- Questions for grandma and grandpa: ten interview questions with lines for the answers.
- A family tree: boxes for the child, two parents and four grandparents, with the child's name filled in.
- A fold-up card with a heart on the front and your message inside.
What questions should I ask my grandparents?
The interview sheet has ten open questions that are easy to answer and tend to lead to stories. They ask where your grandparent grew up, what games they played as a child, their first job, what they did for fun as a teenager, a favourite family recipe, what has changed since they were young, the best advice they were given, a memory of your mom or dad as a child, a song that makes them happy, and what they hope you will remember about them.
Each question has two lines for the answer. Children can write the answers, or a parent can write while the child asks. There is a line at the bottom for who did the interview and the date.
Keep the finished sheet. In a few years it becomes one of the most treasured pages in a family, because it holds the grandparent's own words.
- Print the sheet before the visit or call.
- Let the grandchild ask the questions out loud.
- Write short answers and add more on the back if the stories run long.
- Write any extra questions of your own on the back.
- Date it and keep it with family photos.
How do I fill in the family tree?
The family tree has three rows. The child's box sits at the bottom with their name already printed. Above it are two boxes for parents, and above those are four boxes for grandparents. Curved branches join each box to the one below it.
Write a name in each box. Grandparents are usually happy to help with the top row and often add maiden names, birthplaces or nicknames. Blended families can write extra names beside the boxes or use the space around the tree. There is no wrong way to fill it in.
- Add a small photo beside each box for a wall display.
- Write birth years under the names if your family knows them.
- Print a spare copy for the grandparents to keep.
How do I fold the Grandparents Day card?
The card is a quarter fold, printed on one side of a single sheet. The front has a heart, "Happy Grandparents Day" and the grandparent's name. Your message goes inside on the right, and the inside left has space for a drawing. Some parts print upside down so that they face the right way once folded.
Fold the top half back behind the bottom half with the printing on the outside, then fold it in half again so the heart is on the front. If you leave the message empty, the inside prints with lines so a child can write it by hand.
What are some simple ways to celebrate Grandparents Day?
The day does not need a big plan. Time together and something handmade usually mean more than a shop-bought gift. The printables on this page fit easily into a short visit, a meal or a video call.
If grandparents live far away, post the card a week early, and do the interview over the phone. Send a photo of the finished family tree, or print a second copy and post it with the card.
- Cook their favourite family recipe together, then add it to the interview sheet.
- Look through old photos and ask who is in each one.
- Play a card game or board game they played as children.
- Record the interview on a phone, with their permission, so you keep their voice too.
- Plant a flower or a small tree together and name it after them.
When is Grandparents Day in 2027?
In the United States, National Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day. In 2027 Labor Day is Monday 6 September, so Grandparents Day is Sunday 12 September. It was first proclaimed in 1978.
Other countries mark a grandparents day on different dates, and some do not have one at all. The printables work any time you want to celebrate your grandparents, including birthdays and family reunions.
