What can you print for Lunar New Year?

The weeks before Lunar New Year are busy. There are envelopes to fill, cards to write, food to plan and a home to get ready. Most free printables give you one fixed design. This maker uses your own names and words, so every label and card is ready to hand over without writing the same thing again and again.

It is free, runs in your browser and needs no account. Pick A4 or US Letter, then print or save as a PDF.

  • Red envelope labels: 21 small labels to a page, each with "For" and a name, plus your family name.
  • Couplet-style greeting cards: two to a page, with a banner and two short lines on the front and your message inside.
  • A family new year goals sheet: a space for each family member and one goal you share.
  • A preparation checklist: the home, decorations, food, red envelopes, visits and the Lantern Festival.

When is Lunar New Year in 2027?

Lunar New Year 2027 falls on Saturday 6 February 2027, with New Year's Eve on Friday 5 February, according to publicholidays.sg and Examine China. It begins the Year of the Goat, which some sources also translate as the Year of the Sheep or Ram.

The celebration traditionally runs for about 15 days and ends with the Lantern Festival, which those sources list for Saturday 20 February 2027. The date follows the lunisolar calendar, so it moves each year, usually landing between late January and mid February.

Lunar New Year is celebrated by Chinese families as the Spring Festival, by Vietnamese families as Tet and by Korean families as Seollal, as well as by many other communities around the world. Customs differ from one family to the next, so treat the checklist as a starting point and keep what fits yours.

How do the red envelope labels work?

Red envelopes with money inside are a well known Lunar New Year gift, often given to children by parents, grandparents and other relatives. When you are filling a stack of them, a label on each one stops mix-ups and saves you writing names on slippery red paper.

Add one name per line, up to 42. Each label reads "Happy New Year", then "For" and the name, then "From the" and your family name. If you leave the names empty, you get a full page of blank labels to write on by hand.

  1. Type your family name.
  2. Add the names of everyone who will receive an envelope, one per line.
  3. Print the label pages, ideally on sticker paper, or on plain paper and use a glue stick.
  4. Cut along the dashed lines and stick one label on each envelope.
  5. Fill the envelopes and keep a few spare labels for visitors.

What are couplet-style greeting cards?

Spring couplets are pairs of lines written on red paper and put up on either side of a door at the new year, often with a short horizontal line across the top. The greeting cards here borrow that layout: a banner at the top, and two tall strips on the left and right with your own lines, stacked one word at a time.

The default lines wish good health and happy days, but you can write anything up to about eight words for each strip. Inside each card is "Dear" and the recipient's name, your message and your family name. The cards are written in English and do not include fortunes or zodiac predictions, so the words are always yours.

Each page holds two cards. Cut along the middle line, then fold each card in half with the printing on the outside, so the couplet design is on the front and your message is on the back.

A family new year goals sheet

The new year is a good moment to talk about what each person hopes for. The goals sheet gives every family member their own panel with writing lines, and a shared box for one thing you will do together this year.

List up to eight family members and their names print at the top of each panel. Children can draw instead of write. Pin the sheet somewhere you will see it, and look back at it when the next new year comes round.

What goes on a Lunar New Year preparation checklist?

The checklist collects common jobs into four groups with tick boxes and a couple of blank lines each for your own. Below them are spaces for visits and calls, and for plans for the Lantern Festival at the end of the celebrations.

  • Before New Year's Eve: clean and tidy the home, buy or make decorations, plan visits, send greetings to family far away.
  • Decorations: red lanterns, couplets for the door, paper cuttings for the windows, flowers or plants.
  • Food: plan the reunion dinner, shop for ingredients, fill a snack tray for guests, set out a fruit bowl.
  • Red envelopes: list who receives one, get crisp new notes, label and fill the envelopes, keep spares.

Printing tips and privacy

Card stock makes sturdier greeting cards, and sticker paper saves time with the labels. The pages use red as the accent colour; switch on the ink saver option if you would like lighter, grey pages.

Names and messages stay in the link after the # in your browser. They are never sent to a server, so you can save the link and reprint next year.
